Travel advice
Because of Addis Ababa’s high altitude temperatures in the capital rarely exceed 25C. However, for those visitors not used to prolonged exposure to the sun you are advised to use sun block or hats to protect against the sun.
In Addis Ababa malaria is not a problem but you should consider prophylaxis if you are planning to travel outside the capital.
You should be careful crossing major roads, and especially when crossing Meskel Square. Traffic is not quite as orderly as in many European cities.
Taxis are usually cheap and easy to find, but it is better to negotiate a price before starting your journey.
Addis Ababa has a lot of beggars and people living on the street and certain parts of the town (especially Mercato and Piassa) are also known for pickpockets.
There are an abundance of fun and interesting cafes and restaurants in the city. In general, it may be safer to drink bottled water which is sold at all cafes and at many street stalls.
