Because of the high altitude (2400m), think of a 10km in Addis Ababa as though it were more like running 10 miles at ea-level.
You should plan to arrive in Addis at least 48 hours before the race to help you recover from your journey and get used to the thin air.
Running up hills anywhere is tough, but particularly so in Addis. Know where the hills come on the course – after 2k and 7k - and save your big efforts for these sections of the course.
Eat a pasta dish the night before and drink a lot of water. Dehydration can be a big problem for runners competing in warm weather at high altitude. Eat a light breakfast (e.g. bread and tea) at least two hours before the start of the race.
Make sure that you arrive at the Meskel Square about one hour before the start. You should expect large crowds!

Do some stretching exercises and jog for about 5-10min before the race, but due to the warm weather and altitude it is not advisable to do a long warm-up routine.
Make sure that you wear your official race T-shirt if you wish to collect a finishers' medal at the finish.
Leave any extra clothing or bags with friends who accompany you to the start - though because of the midday sun, it's unlikely that you will catch a chill in the few hours after the end of the race!
Toilets are available at portaloos on Meskel Square and in permanent toilets situated at the top right of the terraced area above the square.
Expect a fast rush from the front runners when the gun goes. Slower runners/walkers should stand near the back. Do not start too fast and take care not to fall or push other runners.
A shower station is situated at 7.5km above the National Palace.
