2006 Confidence WOMEN FIRST 5km
8000 women took to the streets of Addis for the 2006 Confidence Women First 5km Run held in conjunction with 2006 International Women's Day. The day belonged to Muger Sport Club athlete Rehima Kedir who recorded the biggest win of her career by running away from a class field in this, the third edition of Ethiopia's annual women's-only road race. Kedir, who finished 7th in the 2005 Ethiopian 5,000m championship, took control of the race at the halfway mark and never looked back, crossing the line in a time of 15:42.77, fifteen seconds faster than last year's course record. 2005 race winner Koreni Jelila beat Makeda Haroun to the finish for second place with the Prisons athlete Haroun securing 3rd place. While the cash prizes went to the country’s top club athletes, the occasion was just as special for the thousands of girls and women all dressed in lime-green race T-shirts who completed the 5km distance. Ethiopia's top athletes including Haile Gebrselassie, Meseret Defar, Gete Wami, Berhane Adere and Assefa Mezgebu were among those greeting the runners as they poured over the finish line.
