Burka, Mesfin, and Gobena grab Ethiopian victories

2 February 2010- World indoor 1500m champion Gelete Burka, youngster Hunegnaw Mesfin, and Amane Gobena, who finished second in the 2009 Ethiopian Airlines Great Ethiopian Run 10km, were among the Ethiopian winners of last weekend over the cross country, road, and indoors.

In Karlsruhe, Germany, Burka, who is one of just five women to have finished under four minutes for the indoor 1500m; was in a class of her own winning in a solid 4:03.92 as she began her preparations for the defence of her world indoor title in March in Doha. In the men’s corresponding race, Mekonnen Gebremedhin finished second behincd Kenya’s Gideon Gathimba in 3:37.46.

In Italy, Hunegnaw Mesfin took his second major cross country win this year at the 78th edition of the Cinque Mulini in San Vittore Olona on Sunday. The 21-year old made it a perfect birthday present with victory over Kenyan steeplechaser Richard Mateelong and compatriot Abera Chane. Tizita Bogale and Azmerawork Bekele finished second and fifth respectively in the women’s race.

And the successful season of Amane Gobena continued in the Osake Ladies Marathon in Japan on Sunday. Three months after finishing a surprise second in Ethiopia’s premier road race, the 25-year old clocked 2:25:14 to take victory.
