| Ethiopia’s African meet misses CAA label |
|
1 January 2010- The Pan African category B athletics meeting in Addis Ababa has again missed the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) three-tier competition standard for the fifth year running. Three meetings have the Golden status – Abuja in Nigeria (July 3), Brazzaville in Congo (July 6) and Tangier in Morocco (July 18). Four silver meetings will be held earlier. On April 11 in Reduit, Mauritius, on April 27 in Bamako, Mali, on May 27 in Khartoum, Sudan and June 19 in Tunis. Remaining bronze category meeting is the fixture on April 30 in Ouagadougou in Burkina Faso. The news is a big blow to the organizers of the meeting, the Ethiopian Athletics Federation (EAF), which had hoped that the meeting would be alleviated from its category B to at least bronze status this year. But after postponing the 2009 edition due to a congested domestic structure, the eventuality of the meeting now hands very much in the balance. Important factors in deciding the rating of the meetings include level and diversity of elite athletes, international television coverage, standard of competition and venues. |
