24 December 2009 - There will be no shortage of excitement for athletics fans in Ethiopia as a revamped domestic circuit no less than 20 competitions taking part in the 2010 season. The focal point of the domestic season should be the Ethiopian Athletics Championships in May which will see an advent of both regional and club runners to the Addis Ababa stadium for five days of athletics action. These year’s championships will be used to select Ethiopia’s squad for the CAA African Athletics Championships in Kenya and the IAAF World Junior Championships in Canada. Track runners will have other chances of testing their form before the start of the international outdoor season in May. The Ethiopian Short and Middle Distance Championships in mid January and the Addis Ababa Municipal Championship in April will be a major draw for young runners from the top clubs in Addis Ababa. There will also be plenty of action on the roads as the EAF’s expanded schedule takes competitions throughout the country. The Abebe Bikila Marathon will leave its traditional venue in Addis Ababa and will be held in Hawassa this year for the first time. Hawassa is also the venue for a half marathon and 5km organized by the Great Ethiopian Run. The lower sea level and the flat roads of Hawassa could see some of the fastest times run in Ethiopia this year. The national 15km championships will be held in Mekele, marathon relay championships in Jimma, and the Half Marathon Championships in Sululta. Addis Ababa will see four more road races- the Ethiopian Insurance 10km in May, the Women’s First 5km in March, the Corporate Ring Road Relay in October, and the Great Ethiopian Run in November. |
