Bekele and Dibaba announce busy starts to 2010

21 December 2009- Ethiopia’s Olympic 5000m and 10000m double winners Kenenisa Bekele and Tirunesh Dibaba will have a busy start to their 2010 seasons.

Bekele, who won his first world championship 5000m and 10000m double in Berlin in August this year to add to a similar triumph at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, will start his season at the Great Edinburgh Cross Country in Scotland on January 9th before competing in some indoor races in the run-up to the 2010 World Indoor Championships in Doha, Qatar.

In the Scottish capital, the 27-year old will come up against the current world cross country champion Gebregziabher Gebremariam, who is on top form following four consecutive victories in European cross country circuit. Olympic 5000m silver medalist Eliud Kipchoge is the top Kenyan entrant announced by organizers.

Unlike Bekele, Dibaba will begin her season on the boards with an appearance at the 2010 Reebok Boston Indoor Games in the US. The 24-year old has fond memories of the indoor track at the Roxbury College since breaking the world indoor 5000m record in 2005 and could be chasing a world record over the event, which is now held by compatriot Meseret Defar.

While Bekele chose to take rest after winning the 3000m title at the World Athletics Final in September, Dibaba has made a successful return to action following an injury-plagued track season with a world 15km record in Njimegen in November.
