Merga plans world 15km record attack in the Netherlands

2 December 2009- Ethiopia's marathon runner Deriba Merga will make a serious attack on his own world 15km record this Sunday at the 14th Wincanton Montferland Run in the Netherlands.

The 28-year old currently shares the world record time of 41.29 with Kenyan Felix Limo after registering a record 15km split from the Ras Al Khaimah Half Marathon in February this year.

The defence club runner has endured a mixed 2009 season winning the Boston Marathon, breaking world records at 8km and 15km, winning a half marathon in New Delhi, and taking victory in the Ottawa 10km in Canada. But he has also famously dropped out from two high profile races- the world championships marathon in Berlin after leading for the first 30km and the Great Ethiopian Run 10km road race ten days ago.

In the Netherlands, Merga will be running on a fast course that has served his fellow Ethiopians Haile Gebrselassie and Kenenisa Bekele. Gebrselassie clocked 42.36 to win in 2007, a mark that remains the course record. Bekele won the race in 2001 in a mark that remains the Ethiopian junior record.

Joining Merga in the Netherlands will be the 2009 Ethiopian Airlines Great Ethiopian Run 10km winner Tilahun Regassa, who will compete in his first race after taking his first domestic 10km victory in Addis Ababa ten days ago.
