Ethiopians to take centre stage in New York, Seoul, and Delhi

30 October 2009- Another round of top distance running action takes places this week giving Ethiopian runners a chance to take centre stage in the big money road races across the globe.

In Seoul, South Korea, defending champion Solomon Molla will compete in the JoogAng Seoul Marathon in South Korea on Sunday in a bid to defend his title. The 22-year old won last year’s race in a personal best time of 2:08.36 and will join compatriots Chala Lemi and Wegayehu Tefera in the South Korean capital. Both Molla and Lemi were members of the Ethiopian junior cross country team that won team silver in the 2005 World Cross Country Championships in St. Etienne/St. Galmier, France.

Ethiopian distance running great Derartu Tulu returns to the marathon in New York nearly a year since making her competitive return to action following maternity leave. The 37-year old will take part in her second New York Marathon race and hopes to continue a good streak of form that saw her run 1:10.37 in the ING Philadelphia Half Marathon in September. Dire Tune, who finished second last year, withdrew from New York after missing nearly two weeks mourning for the death of her husband’s father, mother, and sister.

And in Adama, 100km southeast of Addis Ababa, a 30km road race organized by the Ethiopian Athletics Federation (EAF) in the second race of the domestic season.
